Deerassic Park Education Center Announces New Development Director and Summer Events

CAMBRIDGE ­ The Deerassic Park Education Center announces the recent hiring of Lynn Abrams-Spilker as Development and Finance Director.

Abrams-Spilker will oversee business development, finances, grant writing, and corporate sponsorships for the non-profit National Whitetail Deer Education Foundation, which supports the Deerassic Park Education Center on US 22 near Salt Fork State Park.

The NWDEF will again host the annual Deerassic Classic Giveaway August 6 and 7 this year. Tickets are still available at Dunning Motors on Route 209 south in Cambridge, or by calling the Deerassic Classic hotline at 740-435-9500. Only 10,000 tickets will be sold, and only about 3,000 remain.

Last yearıs Deerassic Classic, the first for the non-profit NWDEF, drew 11,500 people to Deerassic Park, and ticket purchasers from over 30 states.

The Deerassic Classic provides funds for educational programs and infrastructure development. This yearıs Classic has been expanded to two days, beginning with a free kick-off party Friday night featuring entertainment, the Big Buck Bonus ticket drawing, and spokesperson Irlene Mandrell. Saturdayıs Deerassic Classic drawing will feature over 200 great prizes, including vehicles, vacations, and a $50,000 grand prize. Irlene Mandrell will also be present Saturday.

Sponsorship opportunities to participate in the Horton Crossbow Celebrity Challenge during the Classic are available by contacting Abrams-Spilker at 740-435-3335. It features a private breakfast and photo with Mandrell, participation in the Celebrity Challenge, and tickets to the hospitality tent.

Excavation of Deerassic Park Education Center grounds has been taking place, preparing the property for parking lots, roads, and other projects. The park is now open for scheduled group tours and field trip programs only.

Excavation and construction is currently underway at the park, preparing the grounds and building roads, parking lots, and a 60ı x 100ı event pavilion. Other projects include trail development and grounds improvement into park-like conditions.

The Deerassic Park Education Center will host the first Ancient Arts Festival June 26 and 27 featuring flint-knappers (the art of making arrowheads) from around the country; musical entertainment featuring Christine Boiano of Santa Fe, NM, on Native American flute; a Scout day; and many vendors and craftspersons from around the country featuring hands-on demonstrations of ancient and heritage arts. A national Atlatl (spear throwing) competition will also take place that weekend. Admission is $5 per vehicle.

Education programs have been successfully launched, and are available to be presented both in school classrooms and as an outdoor field trip experience to Deerassic Park Education Center. Programs feature information about Ohioıs state mammal, the whitetail deer, its impact on Ohioıs history, and a message to youth on the importance of reconnecting with the outdoor world.

Group tours are now available throughout the spring, summer and fall. Tours and field trips feature a visit to the herd of spectacular whitetail deer and interpretive nature walks.
