The Whitetail's Journey
Ohio's State Mammal And Our Past And Future Heritage
___________________________________________________

An educational program for the classroom

YOUR CLASSROOM WILL BE TRANSPORTED THROUGH TIME with an interactive and hands-on program that explores Ohio’s history as influenced by the whitetail deer.

DID YOU KNOW THAT BUCKEYES, the nuts of Ohio’s state tree, were so named because they resembled the beautiful, glassy
img eyes of the whitetail deer? And did you know that the whitetail deer is Ohio’s state mammal? The term “buckeye” not only describes a certain college football team, but any resident of Ohio. This term, derived from the whitetail deer, is just one example of how Ohio’s social history was shaped by the whitetail deer. This animal’s contributions are of great historical significance and have made profound impacts on our culture.

YOU WILL LEARN:

    • How pre-historic Native Americans relied on the whitetail deer for tools, food, clothing and shelter.

    • How early European settlers relied on the whitetail deer for survival, and its impact on our early economy.

    • What happened to the whitetail deer’s habitat,
and the deer, at the turn of the century.

    • Modern-day issues created by the interrelationship of humans, the whitetail, and all of nature.

Programs are one hour long and designed for one classroom at a time. We can visit multiple classrooms throughout the day. Please contact us at 740-435-3335 or education@deerassic.com  to discuss pricing and availability.
